Reconcile
A New Treatment Aid for Separation Anxiety
in Dogs. It is to be used with concurrent
behavior modification therapy.
Reconcile is an new drug used in the treatment of separation anxiety in dogs. It is the same drug as Prozac. Eli Lilly, the giant drug manufacturer, got approval in early 2007 from the FDA to market it for dogs. Eli Lilly was able to demonstrate to the FDA's satisfaction that Reconcile is safe to take and also effective in treating separation anxiety. As is true with all new drugs, it remains to be seen whether it really is safe and effective long-term.
Like Prozac, Reconcile is not something you just take and it solves all your problems. People on Prozac do much much better when they are in therapy and on Prozac. In fact, it is useful to consider these drugs as an adjunct to psychotherapy rather than as a anxiety medication. Taking Reconcile without a solid therapy base is fairly pointless. While we do not need to enlist the services of a doggy-psychiatrist, it is very important to find a trainer with experience in separation anxiety work with you and your dog.
Common side effects include weight loss, decreased appetite, lethargy or depression, vomiting, tremors/shaking/quivering, aggresion, and diarrhea. Seizures are seen infrequently, but can be very serious, even life-threatening.
